This is an incredibly tight, but unexpexted story. No detail unnoticed and no character useless. The author did an incredible job with the world created and the wonderful language used. Wish I could read again for the first time.

I'm not normally a huge fan of fantasy, but this novel certainly cast it's spell and silenced any misgivings by the sheer quality of the writing and the premise. The whole alternate history that the book creates is so believable and enveloping that it becomes difficult to accept that it is all made up. Into that a complex but accessible story of friendship, class, obsession, race and love and I'm sure a hundred other things beside. Highly recommended.

DID NOT FINISH: 60%

Started reading it in my late teens. I had to return the book to the library and then forgot to borrow it back again to finish. Always meant to though. I think I might one day. What I did read of it was very good, quite unforgettable, in fact.
