This was slow going (especially the first two parts - the pace picks up suddenly in the last one) but beautifully written, I enjoyed reading it at bed time, no cliffhangers keeping you up all night. It was whimsical, nonsensical at times, just like a book about faerie magic should be. I loved the sense of humour!
Mr Norrell's despicable, Mr Strange is annoying (I feel like a lot could have been prevented if he paid attention to anyone), but somehow they're so wonderful together! I do see how a sequel was expected, there's so much to follow up on and there were several loose threads (like Flora's involvement - what exactly did Strange ask her to do? What was the boat trip about?) but I think it works out as a standalone well enough.

legsandstuff's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 32%

It was a bit of a slog

"Some years ago there was in the city of York a society of magicians. They met upon the third Wednesday of every month and read each other long, dull papers upon the history of English magic."

Of course, these papers can't compare to the books of magic Mr. Norrell possesses (remember, these are much better than plain old magic books), and when he displays his practical magic in Hurtfew Abbey,
Spoiler causing giant statues to tell of murder, and causing these studious men to search for a man to dash against the abbey's wall
they are disbanded, Norrell moves to London, convinced he is the only English magician. Well, until the charming Jonathan Strange comes along.

(-.25 for length, but also the long length kinda added to it so can't really take too much off for it)
one of those books that I'd love to read again but also this is 1000 pages so I will not be doing that (maybe)
