After a decade, finally finished this book. I'm pretty sure I bought my copy at Borders over a decade ago. And after years and years of fits and starts and not penetrating more than thirty or so pages into the book, 2020 gave me the opportunity to finally dig in and make some serious progress. And progress was certainly made.
This was an excellent book. It was a total delight to read - I loved the world building, the style, the prose, the humor, the footnotes, the characters. It really does have it all. And I don't consider myself a huge fan of British literary humor, but this book was hilarious in many places, either due to the thoughts an actions of the characters, the playful prose, or the absurdity of the world and its history.
I had actually already watched the (excellent) BBC miniseries of the same name a few years back, so I was somewhat familiar with the story and goings ons, and I actually loved the actors and their performances and allowed my mind to use their likenesses when reading the book. The actor who played Norrell in the miniseries was especially excellent and after finishing this book I feel like that performance captured the Essence of Norrell very excellently. Same with the actor who played Childermas. I'll have to revisit the miniseries again very soon.
One thing that does bear mentioning is that I finished this book on January 5th, 2021, and over the past several months it had provided me with a much needed respite from the outside world. I would read for a half hour or hour or so every night before bed and it would push out all anxieties and worries and put my mind and body in a place where sleep could come.
I'd also anticipated just turning the book over in my head for the next several days or longer, which I like to do when I finish a really good book - just revisit in my mind all my favorite moments. But then January 6th happened and it robbed me of that! Suddenly all the fears and anxieties about the real world became very REAL and they dominated my thoughts and this book was shoved back into the recesses of my mind and I haven't thought much about it since. Bleh.
Well, onward. I'm very excited to dive into Piranesi once it reaches paperback in September or so.

Very whimsical and enjoyable! It’s nice not deducing how a book will end in the first 50 pages!
