Cormac McCarthy's first book is kind of an odd one. It's digressive in strange ways and doesn't really seem to be about much of anything except a few bad men doing bad things for seemingly no reason way out on the outskirts of civilization.
It's hypnotic, though. Especially the dialogue and the easy way McCarthy captured people so fully just from the things they say. And there's a lot of dialogue!

I wanted to enjoy this so much more than I did, but I think McCarthy just might not be for me! The lack of names, all the “the man,” “the old man,” “the boy,” “the young boy,” got so confusing for me…it felt like this was intentionally disorienting, but I didn’t see any payoff in it. I was also pretty disappointed with the ending, but I do get the sense that McCarthy doesn’t really care about a happy/conclusive ending.

As with all McCarthy books, the language was beautiful, allowing to fully immerse yourself within the novel. However, the story during the book was hard to follow, and overall there was lack of thread throughout. The ending helped, with it being clearer and having some good passaging and character interactions.
