Wolfhunter River

Wolfhunter River by Rachel Caine is book #3 in the Stillhouse Lake series. Gwen Proctor is the ex-wife of serial killer Marvin Royal. Gwen has a hard time escaping the notoriety associated with her ex-husband’s crimes. However, this time Gwen is trying to help a young girl in a remote part town all while trying to keep her family safe from those who believe she was in on Marvin’s crimes.

The Stillhouse Lake series is one of my favorite series. I’m in love with the complex characters, the action and the resilience of the characters. I can’t wait to read the next installment in this series.

I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Synopsis from NetGalley/Publisher
Gwen Proctor escaped her serial-killer husband and saved her family. What she can’t seem to outrun is his notoriety. Or the sick internet vigilantes still seeking to avenge his crimes. For Gwen, hiding isn’t an option. Not when her only mission is to create a normal life for her kids.

But now, a threatened woman has reached out. Marlene Crockett, from the remote town of Wolfhunter, is panicked for herself and her daughter. When Gwen arrives in the small, isolated rural community, Marlene is already dead—her own daughter blamed for the murder. Except that’s not the person Marlene feared at all. And Gwen isn’t leaving until she finds out who that was.

But it may already be too late. A trap has been set. And it’s poised to snap shut on everyone Gwen loves. Her stalkers are closing in. And in a town as dark as Wolfhunter, it’s so easy for them to hide…

Not as great as the last one, but still very good!
I think it's a good setup for the rest of the story line.

RTC at some point

Gwen gets herself in trouble again. Now that her problems are resolved, she is now getting herself mixed up in everyone else’s problems. You’d think she would just want a nice quiet life now but she goes looking for trouble and brings everyone of her loved ones with her. Still a good book, but not as good as the first 2 books in the series. Seems to be grasping to keep the series alive. We will see how the next book is with Gwen’s new job…

Great.

Loved this 3 book series I highly recommend it. Page turner and the suspense was awesome. If you love a good mystic read this series.

You can’t run from your past. In today’s world of instant communication lies spread faster than the truth. In this third installment we see Gwen still doing whatever she can to stem the tide of hate and protecting her children. She is starting to let others in when a ghost from the past returns. To escape Gwen takes on someone else’s problems and we are caught up in the whirlwind that is Gwen’s life. This is a terrifically twisted tale that will keep you guessing and flipping pages through the very end.

If you're like me, you may have been perfectly content with the ending of the second Stillhouse Lake novel. That's right, I said it, I figured we were done with Killman Creek. After all, the serial killers and the main cause of everyone's angst is dead. There really is not a place to go from there -- or is there? Rachel Caine, like so many authors who start to gain a wide readership, could not stop at the end of book two and decided we needed to travel down a new path.

The new path, unsurprisingly, is going to lead Gwen to become an investigator -- this does not come as a huge shock because, again, there are only so many directions this series of events can take. Rather than just lead into book 3 and tell the reader Gwen has become an investigator we get this novel, Wolfhunter River. This is more of a bridge novel, meant to really get us caught up with the author's trajectory that Gwen is going to become an investigator.

I'm not saying this book is 'bad' in any sense, but I am saying it really took awhile to get going. Over half the novel. Really, most of the excitement comes in the last 25% of the novel. I'm not opposed to a slow build, but this pacing just does not match the first two novels. It made me worry, a bit, because Rachel Caine has hurt me in the past (still upset at the ending for Morganville Vampires and no one shall change my mind on this).

I'm going to give the fourth book a try. But I'm hoping we get back to the pacing of the first two books because this was more of a 'meh' book. Not necessarily memorable. Not one that I'd recommend. Not one that caught my interest -- but I couldn't just skip to the fourth book either.

This is a 3.5 for me. I liked it lot, but there were times I was also wanting it to be paced a bit faster. However, it definitely became fast paced towards the end, with twist after twist, I didn’t know who to trust! Because the latter half of the book was a 4 star and the beginning more of a 3 star, I rated it in the middle.

This is the 3rd book of the Stillhouse Lake Series and again it doesn't disappoint. Gwen Proctor is still trying to live somewhat of a normal life with her children and Sam Cade has become her lover and her partner. As Gwen continues to fight the Internet predators and help her children to cope with the after effects of having a father as a serial killer someone reaches out to her for help! Gwen can't refuse to help this lady when she gets the desperate call for help. When Gwen and her family head to Wolfhunter they have no idea the danger they are in. They are soon running for their lives. Again, I can't recommend this series enough. It's truly one of the most exciting series I've ever read. Well in my case listened to. And I'm onto book 4.
