Wolfhunter River

The Stillhouse Lakes series is my favorite series of all time. Wolfhunter River was just as amazing as the first two books in the series, I’m looking forward to finishing the series in it’s entirety!

In this book, I was really intrigued by Ellie's disappearance and I wanted to know the significance of Gwen and her family. The intensity of Gwen's struggles and her need to escape the documentary crew of "Melvin's Helper" was strong. To get out of town and away from the constant beratement, she accepts the task of going to Wolfhunter and investigating a dramatic experience she witnesses over the phone. Vee, a fifteen-year-old, calls in a desperate moment. Gwen travels to help her. I was also engrossed in Sam Cade's history. In the series, although I liked him, I had a feeling something was lying beneath the surface. I was right. I knew there was darkness in him, but I was surprised to know how deep it ran. Betrayal so deep it shatters a relationship with Gwen that had once held strong.

I enjoyed Caine's ability to propel the story forward, give us enough information to keep us guessing, and the pov changes added to the suspense and thrill fo the story. The imagery and ability to change our emotions is such a skill Caine possesses. I feel like all my emotions take a front seat when I read her book.

I kind of like that although, Ellie is found and Vee is rescued from certain death, the end of the story wasn't completely resolved. Sam and Gwen have so much to work through and figure out, and I think it is a reality. Caine doesn't give us an unrealistic expectation of what could happen. Instead, she leaves us with an ambiguous ending to what happens with Conner, Lanny, Sam, and Vee. It's so realistic to know that traumatic experiences take a long time to work through. I've become so attached to all these characters. The social worker in me wants them to seek therapy and be okay.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series and it's given me a lasting impression in the case of trauma, fighting for what you believe in, having hope, and knowing that the future may hold pain or happiness. Though it all, family stays together and love binds them forever.

Another amazing book to the series! When I saw she had written a third book (and now a fourth) I was really excited. Getting the chance to read this amazing story about Gwen and her family, just excites me on what challenges and dangers she may have to face.
If you love thriller books, this series is perfect! You get crime, thriller, murders, romance, mystery, action and many other amazing things! Rachel Caine is an amazing author, and I adore all her books 😍 I am super excited to see what book 4 will bring in the future ☺️ x

It’s strange how excited I get for rereading this series, but I am now all up to date with what has happened in Gwen’s life so far. I still really enjoyed this book and is definitely a 5⭐️ still. I can’t wait to get stuck into book 4 to see how their story continues.
I am really liking how Rachel does the different POV’s it makes the story interesting, and gives us all an insight on what the other characters are feeling and going through.
I recommend this series, even if your not a crime/mystery person you will be after reading this series x

SO GOOD. I love the characters. I love the internal dialogue. This author can tell a damn story!

Fast-paced ~ Surprising ~ Disturbing

tl; dr: Kidnapping of a young girl unravels a much bigger crime.

Caine is an insanely versatile and prolific writer. I love the variety in her oeuvre. This book is a contemporary thriller, though there are a number of disturbing themes (violence against women and children). Like many of her books, you get multiple first person. Caine is really a master at this. Overall, wonderful story, though I am not sure what I could say that wouldn't give away the story.

Rating:

My day was put on hold so i could devour this book. I'd been so excited to read it and once again Rachel Caine did not let me down. It was incredibly well written, the tension steadily building as Gwen, Sam and the kids headed to Wolfhunter River. The town felt so unsettling and claustrophobic, even when they ventured into the vast forest. The emotional impact of the story was just as shocking as the action and i'm so excited to see what happens next.

#1 Stillhouse Lake: ★★★★
#2 Killman Creek: ★★★★

Here lie goddamn monsters.

Wolfhunter River is an intense and fast-paced Mystery read and a good addition to the series. The character development is still quite strong in this installment, especially as it splits the focus between Gwen and Sam as main characters, and the eerie atmosphere makes this a very tense read. There is still some action, as well as the ever present threat of Melvin, but the main mystery this time around is a bit underwhelming.

Rachel Caine’s writing is engrossing and very compelling. Gwen and Sam’s struggles are packed with so much emotion that you can’t help but feel for them as characters. The novel adds even more complexity to the overreaching series arc and introduces more elements and characters to the mystery surrounding Melvin and his fans.

Eh. I love Gwen and Sam and the kids, and I do have to say that this book brings in quite a few very intriguing elements to their stories. Their connection through Melvin and his crimes continues to become even more tangled up, and there is one particular plot twist in the second half that really hammers that in. It’s very well done and I love how Caine explores that aspect of the story.

The thing is that the Wolfhunter mystery, which also shares the focus on this novel, isn’t all that fleshed out and reads are pretty far fetched. The motivation behind Gwen going to Wolfhunter isn’t all that developed to feel like a strong course of action she’d take, considering her life and what she’s going through, so it’s difficult to connect to that part of the story.

This is a very quick read, though. The fast pace and intense character-driven chapters keep you flipping pages. There’s always this lingering sense of tension surrounding Gwen that translates really well to her inner monologue. Same can be said for Sam and the conflicts he’s facing. I’m really curious to see what’s next for them in the next book.

Overall, Wolfhunter River is a good and fast read with complex characters and quite a few important plot reveals. The series arc gets more development, but the mystery in the novel could’ve been more fleshed out. Still recommend it to all Mystery fans and I’m really curious to see what’s to come!

4/5

This wasn't as good as the first in the series, but much better than the 2nd. And left me wondering if she'll continue with more or if this was just a trilogy. Fast-moving, had me second-guessing pretty much every new character and their intentions. It's a quick, entertaining read.
