I have conflicted feelings about this book, as many others have also commented. It just wasn't what I expected, and I didn't enjoy the childish, unreliable narrator. By the end of the book you find out what has really happened and why it all unfolded as it did. It's a heartfelt ending that almost redeems the story, but for me - not quite.

I honestly didn't know what had happened to the mother and didn't see the twist... even after having read Walk Two Moons which has a similar twist. Slow beginning. Tearjerker ending. Read aloud with my special needs 10 year old. Not sure how well he followed the story, but he really loved anything to do with hobgoblins.
This book just wasn’t for me, and I can’t think of who I would recommend it to. It felt like there were too many popular controversial topics being thrown in and half the time I was trying to figure out the point. It is one of those books you will either love or you won’t.

DNF'ed after reading half of it. Not what I thought this was going to be about. Too many descriptions about an 11 year old's sexual awakening after seeing his 14 year old neighbor's muscles. Also fatphobia
This book is amazing and I highly recommend it for people of all ages
Can we just put labels on books now that say, “Warning: this author has a shaky understanding of the concept of an unreliable narrator, but they’re gonna give it the old college try anyway.”
This book is awful. Unreliable narrators are not done by just writing a bunch of lies in a first person narrator. And massive, massive psychosis is not cured by having your dog die. I am so mad that I invested time in this disaster.
