A great collection of poems.
Honestly I'm not a poetry person. I never could get into it in school and don't find myself looking for it now. But I grabbed this one since Whitman is really just a classic and his name kept coming up as I was reading about the Civil War.
Really good prose here, and of course his famous ones on Lincoln are in here. But how much he wrote about America and the states themselves. That was a nice surprise. Some were long and I did wander a bit, but that's more on me than the writer.

There's extreme talent and skill on display here, but in an effort to read this as a book it begins to drone on. I guess there's a reason why in school we read extracts rather than whole collections.
How can you rate a classic such as this? I don't read enough poetry and this was a healthy addition to my read books.
The best thing about Leaves of Grass is that it is 113 pages of lyrical, larger-than-life, immensely uplifting poetry.
The worst thing about Leaves of Grass is probably that it is 113 pages of lyrical, larger-than-life, immensely uplifting poetry.
It is quite repetitive, mostly in its spirit and themes, but personally I really enjoyed Leaves of Grass - repetitive or not.

I seem to remember a LOT of exclamation points. Nature is great!! Wow!! Emerson said it a lot better. Hippie...
