The story is very engaging and I was pleasantly surprised at Scalzi's ability to write strong female characters. Planning on reading the next one.

A romping, fun sci-fi adventure. Scalzi's humorous prose is made even more enjoyable by Wil Wheaton's audiobook narration.

It's a first book in a series kind of book. We get introduced to lots of characters, identify our heroes and villains, villains try something mildly villainous and get slightly thwarted by the heroes. A likely doomed romance is kicked off and the story ends just as the story macguffin really gets rolling.
Scalzi writes well, the story has some fun elements and the characters are believable, I just have trouble buying into the whole multi-system guild-based empire where a single family has ruled for millennia.
