A comic book elevated to fine art, with gorgeous visuals and a satisfying, complex storyline. Nearly perfect, but for a few small missteps. Recommended, unless you shy away from: violence, cats, or swearing (from high to low prevalence). Note that this hefty volume (18 issues) does not resolve the main story arc. It's not a cliffhanger, but be prepared to read on. Happily.

Wow was I confused through a good portion of this graphic novel collection! I've never given such a high rating to a story that confused me so much... But once you understand all the characters and enemies and races, you can better appreciate the themes, art and characters!
This graphic novel is visually gorgeous. It features a cast of strong women characters, as well as political intrigue and monsters. I had a bit of a hard time following the plot at times (and keeping all the characters straight), but I was captivated by the art and the bravery of Maika Halfwolf. I'm looking forward to reading more of her story.
Incredible! Masterful artwork, beautiful writing, engaging world building. Love the darkness and female-centric fantasy, not something we get to see often enough, and so well done too. Minor nitpicks were excessive use of the word bitch (seems weird that everyone uses it regardless of species in this context) and occasional parts that are a bit hard to follow. However, everything feels more coherent the more I read, and I never felt too overwhelmed by an unfamiliar fantasy setting.
The art is beautiful, but the story... It was simultaneously very long and not long enough. The characters' arcs moved at a snail's pace and were only minimally transformative. To be clear, you start off with basically the same characters you end up with. By the time you put this comic down, you'll be somewhat more familiar with some of the characters' backstories. But that's it. Overall, it was very flat.
I’m not partial to the word “actress” (can you imagine use “doctress” instead of “doctor”) , but somehow at the same time I think “huntress”, “lioness” has a nice ring to it. Now, maybe “monstress” as well.
Female-centred worldbuilding
Queer Asian woman representation
Beautiful art, high fantasy,
Steampunk, Lovecraftian horror,
Don’t know why it’s labelled YA at my local library
