The Sanatorium

Twisty, unique take on a locked door mystery. The main character, Elin, is a detective on leave with a complicated back story (dead brother, traumatic experience on the job, bad relationship with her living brother). She gets trapped in a blizzard at a luxury hotel that used to be a TB sanatorium — people start disappearing and turning up dead - enjoyable, but not earth-shattering. Perfect for a blizzard-y February day!

I wanted so much more from this story. It felt like everything and the kitchen sink was thrown at it. But, on the positive side, the short chapters kept the reading pace brisk. And I did not see the plot twist coming (which is the only reason this gets 3 stars and not 2). Also, it was easily 150-200 pages too long.

Tried to get past the first 50 pages. Picked it up again, and so glad that I did! Really great twists and turns.

So boring... Was hoping for something scary and yet there was even less tension than a usual thriller. So many ridiculous red herrings. Ending was terrible. Skimmed the final chapters because I just did not care.

I'm going to give it a 2.5. If I had to hear about how tears "pricked the back of her eyes" one more time...In all seriousness, I was interested in the premise (I love a atmospheric mystery), but man, Elin is a TERRIBLE detective. I was ok until the end - dumb.

Definitely fits the bill as a creepy gothic murder mystery. With a broken former detective dealing with her own issues while tracking a potential serial killer.

I think most people would give this 4-5 stars I just didn’t love it and I’m not sure why

This was a slow slow read at the beginning, hard to get into, hard to read, hard to stay interested. I know, I know it's got the Reese's book club sticker on the front, that's the whole reason I picked it up! And it's the only reason I kept going instead of putting it aside. It only got good about half way in when Elin started poking her nose in everyone's business and tried to figure out what was going on. Once that happened, the Book turned around and I started to enjoy it.

It had such potential. I so enjoyed the atmosphere and the back story. But it was a swing and a miss.

I'll be keeping an eye out for more by Sarah Pearse. I think she has some incredible writing ahead of her. But this one wasn't up to its potential.
