If there are rules about how to write novels, one rule must be to follow your own narrative. Neither author nor protagonist follow a worn path. The protagonist might say, "Don't let the Man write it for you."

After a very enjoyable and moderately paced amble of back story, the throughline picks up from a trot to a full-on sprint. With almost fraudulent patience, Elwood's reality suddenly whips past the way it's supposed to be. All you will do, what you need to do, it's in the aftermath.

Great ending. I did see the movie first and thought it was better.

Overall, pretty good. Easy to follow, lots of messages appropriate for Black History Month to remind us of the times of the Civil Rights Movement and how the ideals of that movement can be applied today. Unexpected ending but I thought it was fitting for the story.

Incredibly powerful and emotionally taxing. Whitehead’s writing is understated but evocative at the same time. The harsh realities of the seemingly innocuous Nickel School reveal themselves slowly - to me this was more chilling than a gratuitous display of violence.
