Definitely a sad story, but I was expecting to feel more of an emotional impact. I felt detached from the story and its characters. Much of the writing felt textbook-like, emotionless, and choppy. The time jumps made the story hard to follow at times. I didn’t feel connected with the characters as they didn’t have much development or depth. The sense of emotional disconnect from the grim content seems to be intentional as the purpose of this book is to inform readers of the horrors that went on at the reform school from which this story is based. Even though I didn’t love the overall execution of the book, I liked the twist at the end. I know many other people love this book, and it’s an important story to learn about, so I recommend giving this book a try or at least researching the source material for this.

I really wanted to love this book, but it didn't capture me like I thought it would. It's a very sad story and it is told well. There was a slight "twist" at the end. I thought that they captured life after the oppression the boys faced in Nickel well.
