Not my type...
"Love and that love will be returned, trust in the righteous path and it will lead you to deliverance, fight and things will change." Ага, ага, пф.

« Even in death, the boys were trouble ». What an opening line. It belongs in the history books. This book was devastating. I can’t stop thinking about how young Elwood is, going through all of it. What surprised me the most was how casual/normal was the racism/abuse in this book. I know it was meant to highlight the mindset of the era and Elwood’s slow desensitization but it was still shocking to read about. Nickel is a place where even in struggle, there is segregation. And that shows how the system runs deep, how segregation obviously harms black people but also prevent them from forming ties between themselves. The kids are not safe, no matter the race of the adults. This book is classified as historical fiction and as someone non-American, it made me understand the extent of the anger African-Americans feel towards this period of history. The book was very entertaining(?) plot-wise and made me reflect a lot on this part of history. Even made me teary-eyed a bit. Overall, really recommend and I will keep an eye for other Colson Whithead books.
