Elmore Leonard

I’m not 100% sure what the point of this was but everyone is as well-written as you would expect and Jack Foley is pretty great, surrounded by slime.

During quarantine I picked this off my bookshelf. I wanted to see what Elmore Leonard was about, had never read him, and I was predicting this "guy book" would lose my interest, but I got into it. I see reviews that say this doesn't have as much action as his other books. Maybe that's why I liked it. The characters were interesting. Two ex-cons: one a cool, level-headed bank robber, and one hot head big shot, and a girlfriend who sleeps with both of them and then some.

I also see that these characters were in previous books. I read this without knowing that and was able to follow. You can read this as a stand-alone. (Although if I had known, I would've started with the previous one).

Leonard's latest is a sequel to OUT OF SIGHT (at least that's what the movie version was titled, not sure if novel had same name) and brings back the bank-robbing character of Jack Foley. He's out of prison early on and moves to LA where he gets involved in a few schemes to make money while trying not to fall into the temptation to jump back on the bank-robbing wagon. Typical Leonard, although not as crisp and on-point as his classic stuff, but he's getting up there in age so not sure if that can be expected. Still, if you like fast-paced, witty books about criminals, Leonard is always worth a few hours of your time.

.vy.

Since it was my first Elmore Leonard I was off the hook in terms of comparing it to his other work. This was a real break from the stuff I've been reading lately---pure entertainment...great summer material.
adventurous fast-paced

I havn't read many of Elmore Leonard's books, which may be why I enjoyed it more than his other fans. I wasn't familiar to two of these leading characters before I read the book, and had no idea what to expect.
Performing as a good mystery story, this book did rather well. I was unfortunately expecting a sequel to Out of Sight. I didn't see how the two stories connected very well other than a few brief mentions to a character or two from the first book. I also desperately wanted Karen Sisco to come back, and I thought the new lawyer character was taking her place as Foley's love interest.
This book succeeded in my eyes as being an entertaining read, but then again I may not be as familiar with Mr. Leonard's usual brilliance.

Leonard has a very cinematic style, so it's no surprise several of his other works have been made into films. This book was very dialogue-heavy, to a degree that sometimes it's even hard to tell which character is speaking, but it made the story move along quickly.

There was just enough action to keep me interested, not too much too lose me. Each character has his (or her - especially her in this case) own angle in the book which keeps the plot unpredictable and almost seems improvisational at times. I understand some of these characters are reintroduced from former works, so I'll have to check them out. It wasn't as dark as I was expecting, I guess I was thinking it would more pulp.

Still, I had not read Leonard before and I liked it well enough to read something else of his, so I'll definitely do so in the future.

Excellent story

this book was a mess. definitely couldn’t picture clooney as foley again.
