I personally really liked this book. I really liked the idea of being able to use the shadow for different things. actors use it for roles to get more empathy, druggies use it to get the ultimate euthoria and you can even lose your shadow. The main protagonist is a con artist.
I think people are going in expecting the folk of the air trilogy and this is not that. It’s more like the curse workers, since it involves a con artist but has the dark tone of the darkest part of the forest. I really enjoyed this and think most adult readers will like it. People who liked folk of the air and YA readers won’t. It didn’t feel super adult to me still, so I’m not sure why it had to be. Maybe just because her readers are aging out?
This is not a stand-alone as advertised. It’s a duology. Which hopefully means Charlie’s sister will be better developed in the sequel. But the ending annoyed me.

Really cool magic system, interesting plot twists, good character growth, an ending that made me want a sequel.
Moderate: Murder
Minor: Gun violence and Violence
