I knew when I picked up this book that I'd end up in tears. However, Zusak's Three Wild Dogs was a joyful, sometimes exasperated, loving tale of how dogs can truly shape your lives. Even the naughty ones.

The writing was deadpan and hilarious. Each dog was painted with such personality, from the descriptions of their ears to their imagined comments. It was also honest. I resonated so much with Zusak's experiences. I've had a few dogs in my life, some naughty, but all of them left such an impact. Philosophical words weren't needed, and Zusak even comments that he rewrote the epilogue to be less philosophical. It was the little joys of waking up with a slobbery whine, awkwardly pacing yourself on the stairs, and snuggling them close that meant all the world.

Of course I would love a dog memoir, but more importantly, Zusak wrote from the heart the truth of the three wild dogs. It was excellently written and truly made me smile, laugh, and yes, cry.

A love letter to dogs and the special place they hold in our hearts.
Really enjoyed this (especially the audiobook format, I enjoyed Zusak’s narration - especially when voicing the dog’s thoughts!).
