As an owner of two big black dogs myself, and as someone who grew up in the area Zusak still walks his dogs, I found myself completely reflected in his stories. A non-fiction memoir of sorts, based around the stories of the three dogs he has adopted with his family, I thought this book was a wonderful depiction of what it is like taking unpredictable hounds under your wing - afraid of small dog owners who will treat you poorly because your dog is big ('the 1%', he calls them); the fear of giving them up because you know, deep down, no one will care for them enough to see their good; being knocked over (and in his case, knocked out!). I loved this book, and I think anyone who has animals of their own will as well.

As an owner of a “difficult rescue dog” this one hit me in the chest in the best way possible.

What can I say, I’m a sucker for dogs AND for Mark Zusak’s writing. There was no way I wasn’t going to love this.

A beautiful and funny story. Even better listening to the narration.
