Excellent fantasy adventure, marred by many annoying copyedit mistakes.
A great prequel to the Riyria Revelations reveals how Royce and Hadrian first met. Some of it is traditional "guys hate each other until they begrudgingly mutually respect each other and then form a bond" trope that is found in a myriad of fictional works, but I didn't mind it. What was really interesting to me is that those seeds from Heir of Novron are planted so early. Arcadius comes across as being very calculating in that regard. It was interesting to see things from Gwen's perspective, nice to have the book pass the Bechdel Test if nothing else. Crown Tower is almost entirely from Hadrian's perspective which is also different. It was good to get some background. In all, good banter, nice revisiting of characters, a worthy prequel. I really enjoy Royce and Hadrian's chemistry, my only complaint is that they weren't formally introduced until well into the book.
Sometimes it's destiny when two characters meet. No matter what choices were made, they would have always met. Other times, destiny needs a little help from a crazy old wizard. This is a case of the latter.
While this book is actually a prequel, it can be read before Riyria Revelations or - as I did - after. There aren't spoilers in either book, but I think fans of the Revelations might get a bit more out of the book, both in the form of 'easter eggs' and those moments of 'ah-ha'. I know I'm really glad that I chose to read Revelations before Chronicles.
So, if you've read Revelations and like them, you simply must read Chronicles - but what about the people who haven't read Revelations and are a little leery of a six book series (even if the first book is excellent as stand alone, too)? Well, The Crown Tower takes two vastly dissimilar men, the world-weary and cynical assassin Royce and the bloody-handed but still idealistic swordsman Hadrian, and forces them together to fulfill a mission that they each have an important reason to complete.
While it's never easy to write prequels while keeping the characters intact, this book did wonderfully. Each of the characters are logically what they would be before the events of Revelations, without seeming like half-formed people. The characters, as they are right now, make sense. You're not waiting for them to grow, because they are already people in their own right.
The characters are good people - and I mean that morally. Even our assassin has a streak of honor in him that just might show up at surprising times. This isn't a 'dark' fantasy book. While not everything is light, there is enough good in the world of Elan that you won't feel depressed reading this book.
Honestly, the action's great; the characters are great, the writing is great... I'd just recommend this book to anyone that's a fantasy fan and those that are trying to get into fantasy and looking for a great book to start with.

Адриан Блэкуотер - в свои двадцать с хвостиком, уже является прекрасным мечником, ветераном нескольких военных кампаний, но все еще верующий в добро и правое дело. Роис Мельборн - мастер вор, сирота. Окружающие для него либо препятствие (устраняемое точным ударом кинжала), либо инструмент, от которого стоит избавиться сразу же, как он теряет свою ценность. Два абсолютно разных человека, отправленные на опасное дело, что станет началом их долгой дружбы.
Первым доказательством, что вся серия “Рийрия” это взаправду добротное фэнтези, можно назвать тот факт, что цикл обрел популярность на западе, вопреки своим ужасным книжным обложкам.
Второе - книга знает куда надо бить, чтобы вызвать (как минимум у меня) мальчишеский восторг уже с первых страниц. Когда нам представляют Адриана, мы сразу узнаем, что он носит 3 меча - два обычных на поясе и один двуручный на спине (удобно или нет, это не важно), и нам дают понять, что это не просто показуха - он и вправду опытный вояка, способный за себя постоять. А когда на сцену выходит Роис - книга превращается в прекрасный представитель фэнтези бадди-муви, в лучших традициях “Час Пик”, “Смертельное Оружие” с острометными диалогами - ну как тут можно не полюбить книгу. А добавить сверху хорошо написанные драки, невозможное ограбление, и героев, что ведут себя как взрослые. Мой любимый пример последнего - когда Адриану не удается сдержать обещание по защите одного из персонажей, он не впадает в меланхолическую депрессию на две главы, а просто пожимает плечами якобы говоря “нууууу, я сделал все что мог”.
Стоит также заметить, что для человека, что хочет начать знакомство с данным циклом может возникнуть вопрос - с какой книги начинать? С “Короной башни”, цикла приквела “Хроники Рийрии” или же с “Похищение мечей” из цикла “Откровения Рийрии”, действия которого происходят после “Хроники Рийрии”, но написан он был до “Хроник”. Как говорит сам автор - выбор за читателем. Написаны они так, чтобы не спойлить друг друга. Я начал с “Короной башни” и никаких проблем не ощутил. Главное не начинать “Легенд Первой Империи” или же “Rise and Fall” - насколько я понимаю, там уже могут быть спойлеры для Рийрии.
Минусом книги, могу назвать только, что самая Коронная башня и её ограбление происходит почти под самый конец книги и уж очень скороходное.

Обикновена по един много приятен начин. Забавлявах се добре и чакам с нетърпение да си купя следващата част.
Епичното фентъзи напоследък страда от ефекта на "Сага за огън и лед" - насилие и фалшиви герои, които фигурират само за да бъдат измъчвани и убити. Коронованата кула е по-скоро като добрите по-стари фентъзита - Толкин, Реймънд Фийст. Има ханове и се яздят коне и героите се придвижват от точка А до точка Б по опасни пътища. Магията е навсякъде и никъде, също както гоблините, елфите и джуджетата.

Since it is a completely standalone adventure, there's no need to build up to anything. It starts and ends on its own feet, which is where the Revelations can fall flat (each book is designed to be built upon).
Anyways, I found The Crown Tower to be great. The relationship between the main duo is at it's peak, with no rapport established, and both wanting the other dead. A fun shake up to their established relationship.

So incredibly good. Compelling writing. Loved how well delineated the behaviors/personalities of Royce & Hadrian were compared to their personalities in Revelations, while still clearly being Royce & Hadrian. Glad the author decided to write these prequels filling in many important background details.
Being able to go back and see how Riyria came to be was a BLAST and I can't wait to see the rest of their early adventures
