This is so exciting to read how it all began! Royce and Hadrian are back and lovable as ever.
I liked this book a lot. I really did. If I could give it a half star it would be 4.5 stars. But since there aren't half stars, I gave it four out of five stars because I didn't like it quiet as much as I did the other books in the series.
I did love seeing how Royce and Hadrian ended up as partners. What impressed me the most was that their development into partners seemed completely plausible. It was also impressive how all of the facts we already know about their Crown Tower heist and their early days as Riyria fit smoothly into the over arching story. It didn't feel like the author had a few key bulletin points he had to hit and stretched the story around to get there.
I think part of the problem with prequels is already knowing how the characters stories end. So what becomes important is the how and the why they get there.
With Hadrian is was almost painful to see him plodding around through life so clueless. And Royce, well we don't get many chapters from Royce's point of view, but some of the things he said were just so bluntly harsh that I just had to laugh.
But hands down my favorite character was Gwen. She is so cool. (For the first half of the book I loved her more than rose-colored-glasses Hadrian. And Duster.) Even though I know the outcome of Gwen's plots ahead of time, I enjoyed reading her how and whys the most.

I love it. The beginning of Riyria!
It's fun reading the prequal of the story.
It's fun reading the prequal of the story.
An action/adventure prequel story of how Royce and Hadrian met and their first adventure. It is set in a Medieval-like world where there is not much fantasy elements. Royce and Hadrian always have a fun dynamic between them, which is the main draw for this series. I'm not a big fan of prequels and this book brought nothing new. The authors writing skills continue to improve compared to the original Riyria books, which was nice. The story is a self-contained story that it is possible to read this book without reading the previous books.

I discovered the Riyria Revelations after doing a search for something new and well regarded. I finished all three within a month’s span back in 2018. I loved them. I bought and read The Age of Myth (and have the remaining series in my TBR) and bought the prequel series Riyria Chronicles but have never read them. Recently I stumbled upon the crowd sourced Riyria Revelations hardcover set and, remembering how much I enjoyed the series, bought it. They are beautiful and it lead me to A) backing the hardcovers for Riyria Chronicles and B) deciding to dive into the prequel series.
Riyria is the name of given to the two thieves Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater. The Crown Tower tells the story of how these two got pushed together. We are also introduced to Gwen who is an important part of Revelations.
Riyria is a high fantasy series filled with derring do and humor. The banter between Royce and Hadrian is simply fantastic. It reminds me of the quips from things like Lethal Weapon and Plains, Trains, and Automobiles. If you’ve read Revelations, you know how the story ends. But you don’t need to have read that series to start here.
The Crown Tower is a heist story. Which is perfect for thieves. It’s an Ocean’s 11 with only 2. There are some great twists and turns. It’s fun.
