I started reading this series in chronological vs. published order (against recommendations to do the opposite). I was hooked from the first page! I absolutley loved the origin story, though for me it was the introduction to a brand new and exciting world with promises of great things to come. I can't wait to continue the long and tumultuous journey that is Royce and Hadrian and I know Michael will not disappoint. With his ease in words, the author sucks you into the story and the pages fly by!

Michael J. Sullivan writes such fun traditional fantasy. This book has the level of character development for Royce, Hadrian, and Gwen that I was craving when I first picked up Riyria Revelations. I can see why some readers think this prequel series is a perfect place to start with Sullivan’s works. This book is about a tower heist, but it’s so much more than that. It’s about trust, loyalty, friendship, justice, and destiny. Plus the character banter is so fun.

I think I would have liked this better had I read the Riyria Revelations first. Apparently, I'm terrible at doing research. Didn't find out that the Riyria Chronicles is a series of prequels until I was already a couple of chapters in. Oops.
