I've been meaning to read this for a long, long time and I liked it just as much as I thought I would. I love her writing style and the peculiarly Cornish bent to the gothic here, and with all the moody characters and stormy moors this was genuinely the closest I have ever gotten to recapturing the feeling of reading Wuthering Heights for the first time.
slow-paced
This book had me hooked all the way through. The twist was slightly more obvious than Rebecca, but still fairly startling. My only disappointment was the ending...I felt it left Mary weaker than she'd been throughout the book. However, I'd definitely recommend to fans of Rebecca and thrillers.
Całkiem przyjemne czytadełko na letnie wieczory z romansem, tajemnicą i zbrodnią w tle. Gdybym wiedział pewnie bym nie sięgnął bo banalna, ale miło się czytało.
daphne du maurier can do no wrong! i didn’t love this ~quite~ as much as rebecca but it was equally as atmospheric and enthralling. the way she writes setting and all the gothic elements is just incredible. i always really love daphne du maurier’s main characters, and mary yellan was no exception. such a good book to read in january when the weather is awful. just love love love this woman’s writing.
This isn’t my genre, and I guessed the twist. But the setting is well-drawn and Mary felt like a fairly modern woman. Like, I kept thinking that this story reminded me of Tara in Sons of Anarchy.
Next in my project of reading all of Daphne Du Maurier’s novels in order. This is definitely closer to the level of Rebecca than her earlier works, but still not quite there. You do get some lovely hints towards her improved writing, especially in the descriptions of the moors and environment playing on Mary’s mental state at the end. The plot is one of the more concise of her books so far, taking place over much less time than The Loving Spirit, I’ll Never Be Young Again, or Julius. There seems to be less of the outdated writing style of her first couple books, and it’s the first with a female protagonist (excluding The Loving Spirit which is told from four perspectives.) As I was reading, I kept thinking it could make a great movie with the right director.
This is my third Du Maurier and I didn't know what to expect. I really enjoyed Rebecca, but My Cousin Rachel wasn't my cup of tea. I'm glad to say that I enjoyed Jamaica Inn though. It has its fault and is predicable, but I loved the atmosphere Du Maurier created. All in all, I can say that I enjoyed hearing Mary's story and it made me want to read more by Du Maurier again.
