This book is difficult to rate. I guess I'm not much of a horror/thriller/gothic novel reader, but I think historical fiction based primarily in reality can be more moving than excessive depravity. I picked up this book because I was interested in the Cornish setting and the gothic atmosphere, and what kept me going was (unsurprisingly) the proto-feminist ideas and commentary on gender roles and expression, power and wealth in society, communities, and in individual relationships, ethics and morality vs. religion, love, and respect.
This book definitely ranks in my top 10 favorite books, and I'm already looking forward to re-reading it. I read Mary Anne a few years ago and while that book is excellent, Jamaica Inn takes the cake.
The love aspect, which I shamlessly drooled over, was written in such a way that not only did it not get in the way--as they often do--but left you wanting more.
The ending was perfect, just absolutely natural and perfect.
I don't know why Daphne du Maurier isn't spoken about more. She belongs on the shelf right next to the Bronte sisters.

A bleak atmospheric story set on the moor. The writing is so descriptive that you feel like you're there with the characters but it was a bit slow at times.
This is more of a 3.5 -
I loved the atmosphere and descriptions of characters, however there were parts that just dragged for me. I would like to read more from this author.

I think I was expecting another Rebecca, but instead it's not, and it's decidedly not as great. Maybe it's not fair to compare the two, but I think the lesson to take away from this is that a creepy housekeeper is creepier than a creepy albino dude. Was he even an albino? I don't remember. I read this in 1996.
