So nearly 4* - I loved the writing style, and the cast of characters including the city of Florence, and the little snatches of surreal magic. But in the end the perfection and beauty and string of astonishing coincidences and connections became just a little too cloying.

This book is definitely a work of literary art. It does not follow typical conventions and challenges the reader to ascend to its level. I’m not sure I understood everything the author intended, but her musings of love, grief, and life were intricate and moving.

I loved the beginning of this book, the dialogue was written in a really dynamic way. I was expecting to see Evelyn and Ulysses together through the whole story and as I got further into the book, I got less and less interested because I don't think I enjoyed the other characters as much for some reason. I think it was partly the writing style and also the characters themselves.

This is a book that takes its time to establish its core characters, and as such, it took me probably to 30% of the way through before I stopped thinking it felt a bit slow. An interesting read that's more a love letter
