I listened to this book (only way I really like poetry or books in verse). Short book about what everyone would take in a fire and why. Well done.

Read for an upcoming teacher book club. Some of those poems got me right in the chest.

I didn't realize when I got it from Libby that it was a middle-grade book, I was looking for poetry lol. As much as I like the idea of it, it's too kiddish for me to enjoy :/

This book is thought provoking and great for starting conversations about what’s important in life. It focuses on the idea that many people can have different ideas and all can be correct.

Reading 2022
Book 20: The One Thing You’d Save by Linda Sue Park

Texas Bluebonnet List 2022 book. Reviewed for ages 8 and older.

Synopsis: If your house were on fire, what one thing would you save? Newbery Medalist Linda Sue Park explores different answers to this provocative question in linked poems that capture the diverse voices of a middle school class. Illustrated with black-and-white art.

Review: I liked this kid take on the age old question: What would you save if your house was on fire? The teacher posing this question to her class says all the people and pets are safe. What is the next one thing you would save? I have always said my scrapbooks. They are all on a shelf next to our bed, easy to scoop up and go. Always up for a Linda Sue Park book, and I enjoyed this one as some of her others. My rating 4 ⭐️.

What is the ONE thing you would save in a fire, given that all people and pets are safe?????

Linda Sue Park’s The One Thing You’d Save is a unique hybrid of sorts. It’s geared toward middle schoolers, but has lovely black and white illustrations on nearly every page. It is also less than 80 pages long, with sparse text in the Korean sijo poetry style.

By the end of the class, even the teacher rethinks her choices, just as every reader will. This book might not satisfy you, if like me you enjoy plot, but it will make you think about the one thing, or things that matter most to you. Teachers and middle schoolers alike will find this book to be an excellent conversation starter, and the illustrations will entice reluctant and younger readers.
