hey. will. i know this is an early one. maybe even the earliest. but. why? the whiplash of going from hamlet to this. i really need to read a good comedy soon.

I've seen and done this show too much to have any love for it. And the end is just a mess. However, I recently re-read it with some newbies, and they loved it, so maybe it's one of those things where it's great until it's overplayed.

One of the earliest, perhaps the first, Shakespeare plays and it shows. There's an improbably quick resolution and excessive forgiveness meted out to achieve said resolution, because you know, all comedies must end on a happy note. But there are also signs of greatness -- lots of fun word play and plot elements (meetings in monk cells, etc.) that will be used to greater effect in later plays. And one of the loveliest passages I've read in a Shakespeare play to date (spoken by Valentine in Act III, Scene i, lines 170-187 in the Riverside Shakespeare).

WATCH THE PLAY!
Rivalry in love, a girl disguised as a boy, escaping from the city to the forest and lots of marriages at the end. Perhaps lacks a bit of character development to bring it up to the level of some of the better known and loved comedies, but there is a funny dog.

Lots of anti blackness. Lots of random misogyny.

Definitely my least favourite so far of Shakespeare's plays -- you can see clear signs it was his first.
