Definitely my least favourite so far of Shakespeare's plays -- you can see clear signs it was his first.

A lifeless, confounding mess. Populated by cardboard cutouts—with the exception of the all-too-human Launce and his dog Crab—who engage in stiff, low-budget Marx Brothers-type banter with each other, doing the same tiresome trick of twisting homonyms over and over. There are glimpses of future, better Shakespeares here—ladies in disguise, lovers climbing ladders, lovably human clowns—but it’s a wreck, with an appalling and absurd conclusion.

¡Pero qué resolución más precipitada!
Proteus un sorete, Valentine un boludo a cuerda. Yo creo que Sylvia se tendría que haber enamorado de Julia-paje y deberían haber escapado juntas.
Me divertí, igual.

The end of this play is just so very strange.

Good first play, this Shakespeare fellow seems promising.
The Literary Life community is starting a Shakespeare in a Year schedule. I decided not to keep up with that pace, but I am increasing to one play a month and switching to chronological order. Sometime in early 2026 I'll have read all of Shakespeare!
Current ranking:
1. Hamlet
2. Macbeth
3. A Midsummer Night's Dream
4. Othello
5. Two Gentlemen of Verona
Read: The Norton Shakespeare, 3rd edition
- Introductory essay
- Shakespeare's Life and Art - essay by Stephen Greenblatt
- Asimov's Guide to Shakespeare - Two Gentlemen of Verona chapter
