It was bit slow for me to start, but the ending made my heart swell. and the wisdom of some of the characters towards the end was profound. A great reminder to live life.

Throughly enjoyed this book. Clover is a death doula by profession which I found fascinating in and by itself maybe because I’m a registered nurse who worked on an inpatient oncology floor and did some hospice care at that time. Clover’s parents were quite absent and died in an accident when she was 6 years old. Her grandfather took her in and cared for her while she grew up. Sweet story about overcoming fears that had prevented Clover from living a full life. A journey through caring for her clients and having a friend for the first time in addition to being so afraid of rejection that she closed herself off to relationships. Watching her overcome her fears warmed my heart.

This is a beautiful story about living a life versus just living. It is also a story of dying.
This book moved me. It’s last several chapters took a grip on my heart, made me miss my own grandparents more, and reminded me how special life can be when you live it with intention and love.

As someone who was an introverted & lonely child who grew up in Brooklyn, NY, this book hit me hard emotionally.
The premise of this book may sound morbid or bleak, but please go into this with an open mind. This was a book that truly celebrated life.
From the opening sentence “The first time I watched someone die I was five.” I knew this was going to be something special. The main character Clover is a death doula in NYC. Prior to this book I had never heard of a death doula before, and my god, what a harrowing yet beautiful occupation.
This was a poignant and thoughtful coming of age tale/adventure full of wit, charm, and emotion. Clover, like me, is a late bloomer, and I can always relate to female main characters like that. She lived vicariously through endless romcom movie marathons, and that was me for a very long time.
This book has marvelous side characters, a plot that will keep you thinking, and will ultimately leave you with a desire to say I love you more often, and to “be cautiously reckless.”
Read this if you:
- Enjoyed Maame and want to read a coming of age tales with a twist
- Enjoyed the themes in The Midnight Library (specifically regrets)
- Enjoy books with moody vibes & books that will make you ponder the meaning of life
