I love Rick Steves, but was disappointed in the way he spoke of other cultures and people. I know it was his observations as a man in his young 20s, but I just was uncomfortable to read/listen to.

This was a fun printing of Rick Steve’s travel journey from the 70s across a number of counties including Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal. It’s a sweet story, he and his friend exploring the world, and is a great description of those countries and cultures (some of which will never be explored by outsiders anymore). As expected from an early 20’s person it’s not super deep, and that’s okay! Clearly this is the origin story of him getting the travel bug, and that’s fun to read.

I’m not sure what I was looking for in this book, but it wasn’t the travel journals. That’s on me for not reading the description. Maybe I’ll pick it up another time, but even as an audio book it didn’t work for me.

I really enjoyed this audio-book!! I have enjoyed Rick Steves shows for years and his perspective on traveling. I very much enjoyed this look back at an adventure that he took in his 20's and what he was feeling at that time. Some of the language was outdated and he used words that we wouldn't use or say today, but that added to the adventure.
I did not feel he was being offensive even at the time of the original journal entries, but was describing what he was seeing, feeling and experiencing. I had never heard of the hippie trail and it was eye opening, especially as we see what the world is like now and how there would be no way to do this trip in the same exact way.
I think anyone who enjoys travel memories will enjoy this book.
