Toni Morrison

This is a difficult book, and not just because it twists through unmoored narratives and perspectives to sketch an abstract picture of despair. Its difficulty lies in its weight. Morrison, ever the symbolic sorceress, hammers out horrors that are not imaginary. It’s a ghost story, yes, but what leaves us wide awake at night is the deep societal rot at this book’s core; it makes us examine our capacity to destroy each other, which is more harrowing than any ghostly light or dead-eyed woman.

This is a brilliant work, but it’s not for the faint of heart.

absolutely fucking devastating ghost story, reiterates not only the horror of slavery, but the generational trauma and scars it leaves on the next generations. toni morrison just melts into her characters completely and their narratives are so entrancing, especially when she dissolves into first person. the back half of the book i read in 3 sits (would've been 2 if i didn't have to get off the train, would've been one if I didn't have to sleep eventually).

This is sure not a book to listen to the audiobook of. It's basically impossible to follow because of the jumping back and forth in time and between folks. It feels repetitive? This is probably a really different experience when it's read, but this was hard as heck to follow.

I read this book for school. I personally didn't like it, but at the same time it is not a book I would willingly choose to read on my own.
