Listened to this in audiobook format. Honestly almost abandoned it from how slow paced it was and how I wasn’t loving the narrator pitching her voice for Cameron and the tone of the man’s voice used for Marcellus. The first half of the book really focused on Cameron and Tovas lives separately and it was hard to imagine how they ever end up sharing a storyline. I also struggled to see how Marcellus and Tova would ever grow exceptionally close.
This book took a real turn in the second half though when I almost put it down for good. Everything really shifted when the twist was revealed and from there I invested.
The way the story wrapped up so neatly and beautifully really made me change my mind about this book. I was wavering between 3.5 and 4 stars but landed on 4 after Tova and Marcellus’s farewell.

I absolutely adored this book. It is written well, I didn't want to stop reading it, the characters are well developed, and who doesn't love a happy ending? It was a little predictable, especially after about mid-way through the story, but I did not mind at all. I enjoy reading thinking, "will what I thought be true?". It doesn't make the story less wonderful. This is 100% a comfort read, and I think the insights are profoundly deep.

A refreshing reflective read about coming to terms with loss and accepting the unknown. Tova is such an interesting main character, I loved reading about her quirks and habits. The characters felt very fleshed out and full. The plot was a bit predictable but enjoyable nonetheless.

crying = five stars
beautifully written with an interesting and unexpected plot. i was swept away by most of the characters and i was so extremely into the story that all the misunderstandings were painful. miscommunication is one of my least favorite tropes, but this book handles it (as well as just sort of lack of communication?) pretty well because the characters don’t know they SHOULD communicate!  it was for sure still frustrating, but it felt mostly realistic more than an author not letting characters talk so the plot goes on longer.
auagahhhhggdfhh.

This was a cute and sweet read and is definitely up there in terms of literature focused on octopuses (of which there is a surprising amount). I liked the plot well enough but things were laid out so perfectly that I kept getting frustrated that the characters couldn't figure things out. I wish we'd spent more time with Marcellus, because he was by far the best character.
