A fun and lively early chapter book for transitional readers. Abundantly illustrated in color, with large print, it's bound to draw in new readers. My son's a bit of a lazy reader sometimes, so he appreciates being able to pick up books that require less effort every once in a while. I asked him how he liked this one, and at first he said it was alright, only to then add "No, it's actually quite funny!" And there's quite a few more in the series.

Great, entertaining book! My three boys loved this story and the character of Mercy. There were many laughs and they begged to read it again for days afterwards. Very enjoyable.

This book is a delight to read aloud! My 3yo sits in and listens to lots of read alouds of older chapter books with her big 7yo brother. But this was the perfect first chapter book for her and I to dive into together. After finishing our first read through of it, she immediately asked to start reading it again. So that’s what we are doing! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series with her.

I read these books with my daughter a few years ago. We started the series, but she ended up growing as a reader and wanted to read the rest on her own. So now, I'm going back and rereading the series on my own!
I love Mercy's spunk and tenacity. When she sees what she wants, she goes for it! Kate DiCamillo always knows the right storyline, the right phrases and the right outcomes for each story to have. The stories are only enhanced by Chris Van Dusen's fantastic illustrations. I love the details each one has!

A delightfully charming children's book. It also makes one hungry for hot buttered toast.

Mercy Watson is my favorite series for introducing chapter books. The plot is delightfully original and unpredictable. The vocabulary is accessible to early readers with just enough new, challenging words to give the book an educator’s stamp of approval. The characters are almost annoying in their realistic absurdity- and yet there is a sense of mutual respect and propriety among the them, earning good marks for character. When we read it aloud, I give the characters Minnesota accents and it’s perfect. (6)
