kinda loved this: dovetails fully into possible what if-scenarios and parallel universes, without offering any real answers to the original trilogy or compromising the new weird vibes.

DID NOT FINISH: 30%

got like 30% into this one and just couldn’t vibe with it. the narration is rambly, Old Jim is kinda boring, and the novel’s world somehow feels devoid of the strange, beautiful gruesomeness and mystery that hooked me in the first three Area X books. might just be a case of bad timing for me on this one; I started reading it last year when it was released, had to return my copy to the library, got sidetracked with other reads, and just picked it up again a week ago. I may return to Absolution in the future when I feel I have more patience to invest in a book like this, but the reading experience thus far has just been…exhausting and not really fun.

Still cool vibes and great scenes, but I don't feel like it really added to the series. It felt like bonus content. It all leads up to shit we already know, and that makes it a lot less interesting to me.

Just, this is a masterwork.

It’s so weird, and scary, and lush, and alive, and perfect.

You know how artists pull the same face as the subject of their drawing. Jeff Vandermeer does the same with his writing and somehow makes all his readers pull the same face too. Every point of view character is so fleshed out, the writing for each of them so distinct. A story that makes perfect use of its medium.

I could sing praises for his writing forever.

Just like all the previous entries, this book is so rewarding. It doesn’t treat you like an idiot. It’s saying youre smart enough to figure it out, I’m not gonna spell it out for you.

Pernah g si baca buku yg kek nyuruh lo “pikir sendiri”. Nah, ini neh.

A series that ends on a riotous crescendo. Perfect.

Anyway, ANOTHER BANGER BY JEFF VANDERMEER.

Enjoyed the first 2/3s. Found the tonal shift and writing choices in the final third to be baffling and annoying
