A promising set up and first two missions drops the interest/style in the final act to become an absolute slog to finish.

This book is broken into essentially two different prequel stories about Area X. I enjoyed the Old Jim story quite a lot, but did not enjoy the Lowry story very much at all. The writing style across the two narratives is different and I didn’t like the change. I would say this is the least strong of the series. That said, I still love revisiting the Southern Reach.

I give up and I'm marking this as complete because I'm giving up on the final section of the book, which is about 90~100 pages. I tried to finish this but the final character and writing choices made it unbearable. That being said the rest of the book was fine, if kind of slow. I was never interested in reading the sequels to Annihilation after reading a preview sample of the 2nd book so I'm not sure why I read the prequel. I wouldn't recommend picking this one up unless you've really enjoyed the sequels.

really good as usual. old jim’s chapters were a great insight into more of the inner workings of central and how it morphed into the mess that was the southern reach branch. lowry’s chapters were as fun to read as they were abrasive.
