I really enjoyed the setting and the lore of this one.

Nuclear holocaust leads to the mutation of any creatures living on the surface and the remaining surviving humans to have to rebuild society/cities and technology. Enter vampires who become nobility and are able usher in a new technologically advanced era only to be overthrown by humans. In present, they live on the outskirts of human society on the verge of extinction and terrorizing human locals. The one for this book is like western with vampires and lasers. What could go wrong?

Mostly the women characters. The women are strong and cool but never as strong as any man. They all need to be rescued or are under a man’s spell.

The story was interesting enough—lots of double crosses, morally grey characters. It ends as you think it might but the journey to get there isn’t always predictable. Lots of cool creatures/characters. The writing I enjoyed overall.

This graphic audio book was also well done. It took a minute to get used to the narrator’s voice though and sometimes it was hard for me to understand. I think I’m just not used to his voice.

A good time but I just wish the women would have been better done. Likely a product of its time.

This book is a major mess of genres, a pulpy vampire epic where a badass protagonist slashes through every monster imaginable. The descriptions are lavish, while the characters leap off the page, from the stoic D to the clearly Southern Doris. Battle scenes explode with over-the-top action like a light novel on steroids, and the dialogue, though a bit melodramatic, fits the cheesy charm perfectly. (Some translations probably didn’t westernize well.)

It's a genre blender gone rogue, a mashup of dark fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and spaghetti westerns. Vampire Hunter D is very much pulp fiction, an exhilarating ride that doesn't take itself too seriously. Just grab your stake, suspend your disbelief, and enjoy the fun!

I’ve wanted to get into this series for YEARS, but didn’t feel like tracking down 20 separate volumes in order to do so. Thankfully they’re being released in omnibus form now so I can finally binge them at leisure. :)

I really enjoyed the prose and the world building sci-fi/fantasy horror was fairly refreshing. The eponymous “D” is such an intriguing and mysterious character, and I’m excited to learn more about him as I get further into the series. I think I have a soft spot for wandering loners with special jobs they have to fulfill.

Many aspects of this book have aged well, but the casual sexism and flimsily written women have not. I consider this an unavoidable fault of a lot of older media, and try not to hold it against the work itself, despite how annoying it can get. I’m hoping this improves as the series progresses, as it would be a shame to have to always bookend my praise of it with the standard “but also it’s kinda dated so expect a good amount of misogyny.”

Although the art was beautiful, the story itself felt flat. Still prefer the movies, in particular Bloodlust. Oh well.

About the Book: Humanity’s future, having underwent a cataclysm, is dire, as they live harassed by monsters of magic, created by vampires also known as nobility. Due to this a new profession came to be, one of monster hunters, among whom those who specialize in vampires are of legendary status. Such is D, hailed down by a young woman, who needs to hire him for the vampire problem she’s having. A powerful old noble with a family of monsters…

My Opinion: Amazing world lore. Future is like a more modern, and much darker version of Castlevania. People huddle together, and survive as they can. From mechanical horses, to fog ghosts killed by laser beams. From vampires, to extremely genetically modified food. D’s history is barely touched upon, likely on purpose, as every crumb only served to peak the curiosity. It’s a very unique and beautiful creation, that might be interesting to all those who are into Castlevania and Warhammer 40k type of sci-fi.

First time listening to the dramatization. And I definitely can say I enjoyed every minute of it. The cast was incredible and will be continuing this series

After hearing about this mysterious Vampire Hunter D, after watching some of the laughably bad 1985 Vampire Hunter D movie (based on this book), and after watching Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, how could I not look into the light novels?
