I listened to the dramatized version of this and it was a very enjoyable listening experience. I was intrigued by the cover and the blurb and wasn't disappointed one bit. Definitely going to continue with the series, hopefully soon

This gets a wholehearted, Randy Jackson, “It’s a no for me, dog.” This is one of those things where if someone tells you the premise and you’re anything like a sci-fi or horror nerd you go, “Oh hell yes, that sounds amazing.” Here’s what I knew going in.

The premise is that it’s the post-apocalypse of another post-apocalypse. Humans killed each other in a nuclear war and in the aftermath, vampires took over. They called themselves the Nobility and they ruled the world for thousands of years. But they’ve also almost died out so now the world is just a scattered bunch of settlements that fend off vampires and these hunters are the most important people in the world.

Sounds crazy. It’s so boring, though. And terribly written. I mean just so bad. I finished it but whoa boy did I feel like quitting. So much of this book is people just saying the dumbest stuff, making the dumbest choices. The whole thing is telling rather than showing which makes for clunky writing. I know it’s translated but I don’t feel like the issues are due to the translation-it feels very much like it has to be almost a direct translation because of how specific it is. Could be wrong.

It’s pulpy and dumb and from what I can see a bit overrated in my opinion but I can see why people would like it.

I have been reading this book off and on for several months now and I'm fed up with it. I got to the second-to-last chapter and threw it out the window.

My problem is that the story is just absolute crap. You could chalk it up to poor translation from Japanese, but that doesn't make up for the terrible characterization or the laughably absurd plot, even for a fantasy/horror.

Characters seem to change drastically from one chapter to the next. Case in point: Doris, the main female, is a vicious fighter and hates the vampire that bit her and his daughter who is constantly out to kill her. Once she has the daughter cornered and could easily shove a stake in her chest she's "overcome by her helpless beauty." Suddenly Doris says "Oh, we can't harm her. She's defenseless. It isn't right!" WITH THE FUCK?!?!?! This is ABSURD. What's worse is that she still feels this way after the vampire girl tries to kill her, yet again.

Not to mention the vampire-run weather machines, their ability to remotely wipe the minds of anyone who realizes garlic is their weakness thanks to some distant and long-lost computer, etc, etc.

This is just sloppy writing at its finest. It's as though this world can't decide if it's based on ancient magic or post-apocalyptic vampire technology.

The ONLY people who will like this are those who are blinded by the anime films and WANT to believe that it is good, or those who have no concept of plot and characterization.

Just watch the movies. They took a concept and made it incredibly entertaining and enjoyable. This is just garbage.

Although the idea is interesting, I found the development and writing style erratic, the pacing slow and heavy, and I lost interest in a short time. Two stars for good ideas (although questionable application) and one for the narration, which I found slower than it should be.

After hearing about this mysterious Vampire Hunter D, after watching some of the laughably bad 1985 Vampire Hunter D movie (based on this book), and after watching Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, how could I not look into the light novels?
