I enjoyed it, but it’s not as good as the other books.
Atlantis Complex feels very much like a gap-filler, a way to move the plot into a certain place in preparation for the final book (even though I’ve not read The Last Guardian yet and have no idea if anything in this links into it). There are lots of funny lines and mentions of characters from previous books, but the general plot feels a bit contrived and is overall Meh.

The other books of this series is very good.
In the other books the plots are unpredictable(which I like).
In this book, we do not see the criminal prodigy, Artemis' devious plans to achieve his goals.

Altogether, the book was not up to my expectation.

While it does not have the same sense of scale previous entries have had, I appreciate a more mental struggle for the characters, and the fact that Opal Koboi is nowhere to be found in this entry.

Review originally published 10 Septeber 2010 at Falling Letters.

After the sixth book in the series, [b: The Time Paradox|2179276|The Time Paradox (Artemis Fowl #6)|Eoin Colfer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1522190483l/2179276._SX50_.jpg|2184954], was released, I don’t know why, but I doubted that another book would be released. Well, surprises, surprises! Usually I’m on top of these things, but I only knew this book existed once I saw it stores. I bought it immediately but didn’t devour it immediately which might tell you something about the quality of the book.

I think the best volumes of the series were 1-4. Volumes 5 and 6 were fine, but not quite as good as the previous four. As for The Atlantis Complex, I can think of a few terms and phrases to describe it (in comparison to the other books in the series): Dull. Jokes that aren’t funny. Not up to standards. Lacking in character and plot. Disappointing. If the next book (to be the final) is on the same level as this one, I will be more than a little upset.

The main issue with this book is that the plot and characters are greatly lacking and those are the two things I love most about the Artemis Fowl series. There was no suspense, no clever twists and turns. The idea of Atlantis Complex was an intriguing one but it was executed poorly (Orion = one of the worsts ideas in the book). I didn’t feel as connected to the characters. They didn’t make me laugh, smile or cry with their weak dialogue. The whole book just fell flat: It felt like a poorly written fanfiction.

HOWEVER! Not all was terrible. I still enjoyed reading a new Artemis adventure, even if it was not nearly as good. If you’re a fan you’ll make it through this volume, just perhaps not as urgently as the other books.
Spoiler The villain was unexpected. (To people disappointed with the lack of Opal: Don’t you know she only shows up in every second book? ;P Save Artemis’ final battle for her!) Towards the end of the book, Artemis says something that I think redeems the novel, if only a little bit:
“This adventure was different, Holly. Usually someone wins, and we are better off at the end. But this time so many people died – innocents -and no one has benefited.”

I think that quote summarizes the book quite well. The adventure was different, and no one benefited.

I'm starting to get withdrawal pangs already. I only have one book left in the Artemis Fowl series and I'm suffering feelings of loss and sadness. I love this series. He's funnier, smarter, more sarcastic and has better friends than Harry Potter. Thank Eoin Colfer for a brilliant series of books which anyone of any age can read and enjoy (I'm 55 by the way). So we'll written, such great characters. Guess I'll have to read The Fowl Twins after Artemis has left me.

By this point in the series I was pretty much just trying to finish it. I think that the 'Atlantis Complex' was an interesting idea but I personally found it to be somewhat random, like the story line was all over the place. Orion was entertaining, but I found him to be irritating and that overshadowed the good.
Once again there was a great underlying story line that was unveiled slowly.
I think it's like the Matrix, Die Hard, Borne, and Bond movies: after about 3 or 4 it's time to put this to rest.

I think my problem with this addition to the series is that it felt like a half hour sitcom instead of a full-length feature film. (Like the opening sequence of a James Bond movie.) I kept waiting for the real story to begin when I realized I was halfway through the book.

And I agree with Rob--it was dastardly of the publisher to change the cover design mid-series.

I was diappointed in the storyline of the continuing adventures of Artemis Fowl. I'm assuming this book is a bridge novel leading to something bigger and better in book #8.

Worst Artemis Fowl book yet! I don't even think I'm going to keep it, because if I do a reread I'll probably skip this one. (Luckily, it's totally skippable.)

Artemis Fowl (The character) is what makes these books. His character, intellect, and somewhat lack of morals. All of that is ruined in Atlantis Complex. Artemis has OCD, hallucinations, and paranoia. As if that wasn't bad enough, then he turned into Orion, an overly moral dimwit. This isn't Artemis! Why oh why did he do this to me? (Also, I'm pretty sure in his crazy state he spent all his money, so poor and stupid. Just no.)

I really don't like Artemis's mom. She's controlling and manipulative, and keeps trying to change him. (She's probably the reason for his Atlantis Complex, constantly making him feel guilty for the mesmers.)

This time Foaly is along for the adventure with Holly and Artemis. His reaction to all of the danger was funny and I'm glad he was in it more.

Butler and Juliet had their own adventure in Cancun. I'm still not fond of Juliet and those parts were just boring.

There's actually a new villain! He was a complex character. (Not just a crazy pixie who wants to rule everybody.) And I liked how he was made relatable with his wife. Even though he was the most evil villain yet. He totally didn't care how many people he killed. (and there were a lot of deaths.)

Artemis's last plot was a clever one and made this book not a complete waste of time. (I think if he'd just had the multiple personalities part of Atlantis Complex it could've even been funny. But the paranoia and counting was too much.)
