This was a great romantic comedy! I loved reading it and stayed up late to finish it. The 3 girls, 3 boys becoming friends and hanging out had a "Friends" tv-show feel to it, which is probably partly why I liked it so much! I think I've found a new author to read!
This is the 'B' book in the A-Z Romance Challenge. I'm choosing her because she wrote one of my default I-don't-know-what-to-read-so-I'll-read-this-again books, Agnes and the Hitman. This also points out a dilemma. I'm probably going to pick stuff that sounds safe (especially since the 'A' book was a stinker, so, please tell me what to read. It has to be a romance. If you pick it and the library has it. I'll read it. just comment on this. If you give me an 'E' book and I've already got one, I'll tell you. Please and thanks.
A friend recommended this and I have to say I enjoyed it. Not too deep (trashy romance and all), but very entertaining. I liked the humor of the author and the realness of the characters. I don't read many romances, but of the few I have, this one is probably my favorite so far.

I thought this was a really tedious read. I pushed through to the end because it had come highly recommended by some people whose opinion I trust (though perhaps I shouldn't), however, this book was not my cup of tea. I didn't feel the chemistry between the leads, the book was too long and drawn out for the story within, and the ending was lukewarm and not particularly satisfying. The leads felt cartoonish and not like real people. Perhaps the fact this book was written fifteen years ago matters more than one might think, because the style is notably different from the more recent examples of contemporary romance.
What a great way to spend a few hours!
Light-hearted, rom-com with an opposites attract, enemies to lovers storyline.
Min is an actuary who's always thinking in terms of statistics and probabilities. Relationships are more about likelihood of sucess rather than unquantifiable things like love and attraction.
The book opens with Min being dumped by her less-than-stellar boyfriend David three weeks out from her sister's wedding. Min has body confidence issues thanks to her mother's constant fixation on her shape and diet. Min is voluptuous and under pressure to lose weight for the wedding. When David made some deprecating comment about it early in their relationship Min decided she didn't want to get naked in front of him, and so had been resisting his sexual advances.
Cal is a serial dater. He's not looking for anyone long term. Great-looking, successful and confident. He leaves his ex's well-satisfied, but heartbroken when he leaves.
Turns out David is a client of Cal's company. After too many drinks at the bar they all happen to be at, David bets Cal he couldn't get Min to sleep with him. Cal (being a decent human) doesn't agree with the whole thing, but ends up betting that he could take her out to dinner. Through circumstances, Min happens to overhear some of the conversation regarding the bet and she decides to 'let' Cal take her out to get back at David for being an ass, figuring she will make Cal pay for taking the bet somehow too.
Hijinx ensue. Cal and Min start out on the back foot and though they clash terribly, fate has other plans for them.
Great secondary characters, especially Min and Cal's friends. A fun read, well worth its high star rating. I'd definitely read more from this author.
This book contains descriptive love scenes.
RE-READ 2024: still a top-shelf read.

3 stars. I liked the romance but not the characters. Does that make any sense? Probably not. I just didn’t feel anything but annoyance. Min was not very likable to me and Cal was way too perfect which made him such a bore. Also, the side characters were way too weirdly involved and I didn’t like any of them either. Just a cast of annoying pain in the ass characters in this.
The writing was good and it’s a quick paced read. I did cringe at some of the outdated humor and dialogue but that’s no fault of the book it’s just a product of its time. I would probably pick up something else from Crusie but I’m not in a rush to. Like I said the romance was quite adorable and I did like Min and Cal’s chemistry when they got their heads out of their asses and communicated like adults.
This is such a beloved book and I wanted to see what the hype was about. Didn’t deliver for me but it wasn’t awful.

It was all so over the top and not believable. I didn’t care for any of the side characters. Not a memorable book.

The reviews on this book on this app skew differently than elsewhere. This is considered a cornerstone text of the contemporary romance novel, a book that makes many people say this one, if you will. It’s funny and zippy and sincere and understands that a love story is not just two people but a whole life. It’s one of the only romance novels I have reread, and I have reread it multiple times.
As for the fat-focus, it was published in 2004. A time when many of us knew many women who had never been OFF a diet. A time when sizes 4 and 6 were great for casting the chubby girl in a movie and “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” was the proverb known everywhere. Min in zaftig and overweight in that world, and the constant references to her weight (but without specific numbers) are joining that dialogue. If you learned to sit down with a pillow to hide your stomach even fully clothed, you get it. The setting is not 2025 plus-size online spaces.
A favorite book of mine!
