In life we come across many strange characters. There are the characters that we see on Sitcoms on TV such as "Big Bang Theory" or "Seinfeld", where the quirks of the characters make them funny as well as relatable. But great novels have characters that are better than any character that we could see on any television program. Oblomov is a novel like this.
Oblomov is the story of a Russian nobleman who is so lazy that he rarely changes out of his pajamas. Perhaps he is a 19th century Russian version of Hugh Hefner. Oblomov just hangs out as life happens around him. Loves that could have filled his life are attracted to his friends. Opportunities for enrichment pass him by as well. It is a statement of the priveleged class in society who take their position for granted and sit by while others usurp their position and achievements.
But you can't be too down on Oblomov. He is a pretty lovable character despite his laziness. He is a good friend and is generous. He humors his friends even as he refuses to partake in their lives. The end of the story is kind of sad, but this is a wonderful book about human nature and life. Well recommended.

Got me hooked after a few chapters and was a very worthwhile, even if partly lengthy, read. Great insights about human nature through the polar opposites Oblomow and Stolz, and how love can change us to a certain degree but never overcome our true nature or too deeply ingrained habits and patterns.

What a triumph! Truly one of the great achievements in the novel form. However, I may be in the minority in seeing this as more truly the story of Olga than of Oblomov; the parts with her are the most vibrant, most intellectually expansive and spiritually effulgent. She must have been to some degree a pattern for War and Peace's Natalya Rostov; she is one of the most fascinating romantic heroines in European literature.
