«Perhaps you may not need powers to be powerful.»
«If only death had any regard for promises.»
“She’s too stubborn to die, and I’m too stubborn to let her.”
“If I am to be her enemy, I want it to be because she loathes herself for wanting me.”
“My soldiers don’t mean anything to me. They are expendable and easy to replace.” His chest heaves, his eyes locked with mine. “So, yes, Gray. You aren’t one of my soldiers.”
“There’s no music,” she says flatly, her voice laced with amusement
“Well then I guess we won’t know when to stop dancing. How unfortunate.”
“And this is for me, you son of a bitch.”

1🌶️ (Steamy)
This YA romantasy is the perfect blend of age-appropriate romantic tension and page-turning action. I’m a 30-year-old habitual smut reader who enjoyed this book, and I’m saying that this book was clean as a whistle and it still had me giggling and kicking my feet and just how cute the MMC is. You think SMUT is ruining men for women? No, no. It’s men like Kai who speak in LITERAL POETRY that are setting unrealistic man standards, and honestly, never change.
I will say my dumb ADHD brain did struggle to WANT to read this book through the first 50%, but I struggle with slow burns, so that’s a me thing. The plot was a little long and at times I wondered if we were adding stuff just to make it “fantasy.”
HOWEVER. This book was solid. I do note regret listening/reading. I will totally read Reckless when it hits shelves in July.

If you ever wished there was a hunger games meets Harry Potter and the goblet of fire style competition, you will love the Trials in this book. If you love the male main character falling first & falling harder, you will love this book. Love, betrayal, trauma, family, and strength are the major topics of this book.
I appreciate how the author handles the female main character’s trauma as something she is stronger in spite of, and not because of. I like how despite her growth and time passing, she still shows signs of struggle and wounds that never healed. It makes the impact of what has happened to her feel more relatable and real. It also contrasted nicely with how the male main character processed his trauma.
Overall I’d say it was definitely worth the read
