¿No quieres tener hijos?

I wish I DNF’d this so bad.

It started off promising, I love the concept of a dystopian system helping to get pregnant, then overparenting until the baby gets snatched. It makes such a good plot to a series or something but this book executed this poorly.

I found the ending very bland, there was no real depth of it, just finding out what her sister had been through until she had to go through the whole thing herself, turning into what harassed her for all those months.

Even in the present day chapters, seemed promising but instead of how slow it was for the first couple of chapters, it could’ve got straight to the point with it, finding the daughter, moving on to the sister, that didn’t have to take up half of the book, deffo couldve been at the beginning and moved on to something less throughout.

The ending was just plain as shit. I’ve been disappointed by book endings before but with such a promising storyline and plot, I was expecting more. Maybe like a 1984 ending but definitely not that.

Ehh should stopped reading around 20% in

Gripping and beautifully written. Terrifyingly not so far from a world I could imagine this one becoming. Read it in a single day, couldn’t put it down!

I found this book hard to put down! It’s quite bleak at times but Kit’s story and journey to try and keep her family was compelling and well written.

The world building and sinister aspect of the OSIP was quite scary. I really enjoyed the Then and Now set up that the author used to tell the story and it fed well into furthering the darker tone.

The society the author portrayed doesn’t feel like that far a stretch to one we could see in the future. I found myself wondering how I would have reacted in Kit’s (and her sisters) situation, and what I would do to protect my own children. A gripping and thought provoking read.

Thanks to Titan Books for the gifted book in exchange for an honest review.

We are at the point in the year where I nibble many books and find myself in a desert, searching for an oasis of a book that makes me feel something.

At turns dark, trite, and melodramatic, this failed to move the dial for me. I saw the twist coming, and most of the time it read like so many conversations I have with the mothers in my friend group. Mothering is really hard! It's alienating and all consuming! Support isn't forthcoming! People might think you're a bad mom, and (especially if you're poor and/or of color) the government might take your kid away!

There's a way to do dystopia that makes you reflect on how close to that dystopia we already are, and then there are some where you think that maybe the author just woke up from some ex-capitalist society and looked around and was simply shocked at our living conditions.

So, yeah. It was fine.
