A classic adventure story. Following in the same vein as Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and Clive Cussler, themes of excitement, exploration, heroics, and mystery wrap together the text quite well. But unlike some other adventure stories, Riptide, falls too heavily on the negative side as well - strong male lead with no faults, beautiful women for the male lead, cliches abounding. It started off on the wrong foot. Of course the programmer is a slob with poor diet, interested in little but coding and role playing games. Of course he can handle high-end mathematical cryptography, low level programming, networking, hardware, server maintenance. And then there's the preacher, so cliche to feel less than one-dimensional. And then the ending with unnecessary cliff hangers. Hiding information from the reader even though it's super obvious what's happening. It should have been half as long with more interesting characters. The pit exploration was the only interesting part but I was not interested in the rest.

I didn't find this story as engaging as some of the other novels. The main characters were rather blind about seeing clues.

I enjoyed this thriller set off the coast of Maine. It had pirate lore, secret codes, booby traps - and a sense of impending doom as both the weather and the dangers of the pit's contents become more dangerous by the day.

This one took me a while to get into, but once it got to the action I couldn't put it down. Great summer read!

Great cussler-esque adventure story about finding buried treasure. Exciting, page turner.
