Preston and Child tell another incredibly good story! I loved reading this book and kept thinking that if Hollywood could tell stories like this again then more people would be buying DVD's. A pirate's treasure is buried in a nefarious pit on a deserted island off the coast of Maine. Modern-day treasure hunters approach the island's owner hoping to be the last (and successful) team to try to uncover the lost Spanish treasure. But the island doesn't give up it's secrets without a fight. The love of money proves to be the root of all evil... and disaster!

I think if this had been the first book I had read by Preston/Child I would have probably rated it a bit higher. It's a stand-alone novel (i.e. not part of their Pendergast series) and pretty good tale of modern day treasure hunting, based on knowledge of huge (as in over $2 Billion worth) hidden pirate booty. Not only are we talking about gold, jewels, etc but also a fabled sword of St Michael, said to cause death to any who look upon it.
Of course, said treasure is not so easy to collect, especially considering the elaborate water trap involved.
So, overall, a good story. When comparing it to other works by this author duo, it seems very average though. That's not to say "bad' in any way...just not special either. I've also noticed that most of their books have a definite point when they ratchet up the action/suspense and, unfortunately, try to sustain that level of suspense for too long. This is not the first book of theirs that I've found my mind starting to wander just when the suspense should be at its highest. And that's because the suspense has been at a fever pitch for 60-70 pages already.
Just an observation.
The story was good, the main characters pretty interesting although a few were a bit one dimensional, and the ending was satisfying.

Couldn't find the audio version of this book on GoodReads, as that is the edition I accessed. Buried treasure on a remote island foils every attempt to get it over a hundred years supposedly because of a curse. Until modern times and technology promises to overcome that. I liked the story a lot, and found the theme of greed to fit well in the story.
I normally love these authors together but not this book. Something about it was off putting to me.
Read this book too long ago to rate. I do know I did enjoy it, just not certain to what degree.
