3.5 stars. I will never not read a Mothman romance. I’m a fangirl that is just too far gone. The Mothman in this story (“Moth” as he’s unoriginally called) is worthy of 5 stars alone. He’s the perfect amount of enigmatic forest entity, creepy red eyed hopeless romantic that I want in a Mothman. He does shift from a scarier version into a more sexy human form which I also didn’t mind. This story was completely cute as long as he was in the scene. It was a bummer that the FMC kind of fell flat. I get what the author was trying to do (I think?) which was maybe to make her a little unlikable and then appreciate her growth. Unfortunately I think she made her too unlikable. She is just straight up the MOST basic bitch, her life revolves around her being an influencer and gearing everything in her daily routine around making content. However she realizes that lifestyle is not fulfilling so she quits her social media and retreats to a cabin in the woods to go off the grid (if only, am I right??). It’s just really hard for her to let go of that side of herself, and her personality is very grating, the way she talks is like every “it” girl you’ve ever hated. I did not feel like she deserved a wonderful and mysterious creature to fall for her. It’s not until the end that she confronts her (pretty awful) mother and faces her own truths about how she wants to live her life, that she kind of digs out a little soft spot in your heart. The ending was kind of abrupt and unexpected, and I am not sure if I liked it?? I did enjoy the book though, despite the superficial character issue I had. There’s a sequel and I’ll probably read it although I feel like this could have been a stand alone. I’ll never say no to more Mothman though.
