Although I love Jessica Brody's books, I gave this one up. It felt like a waste of time to finish. It was uninteresting and boring.

I wouldn't say this was bad, but I wouldn't say this is one of my favorites. It was a good read though. If you like a story about a group of best friends who have problems of their owns and are oblivious to what each person is going through so it pushes them apart, but in the end they realize that they need to do and come back together as friends who are learning to fix their mistakes and be better, then this is your story.

That's what I really enjoyed through the book. I liked how each boy had something their were struggling with and even though it came between their friendship, they ended up trying to fix it and be better friends to each other. It's what makes this book along with the love interest and other characters that pop up here and there.

Mike, Grayson and Ian are all looking forward to one last carefree summer before they move on from high school and start the next phase in their lives. Unfortunately a carefree summer isn't in the cards for any of them, each of them dealing with difficult circumstances as the summer begins. Grayson is hiding the fact that his mother has left the family and that a car accident may have left him unable to take his football scholarship. Mike's family is struggling to pay the bills so might must take on extra work over the summer all while dealing with what could be a final break up with his on-again, off-again childhood sweetheart. Ian is trying to deal with this loss of his father as his mother spirals out of control. Can their childhood friendship survive the summer?

Beaches? Check. Best friends? Clam bakes? Check. Summer romance? Check. I'm not usually one for contemporary reads but the cover and the promise of a fun, summer read caught my attention. It refreshing to read a young adult book told from the viewpoints of three male protagonists. I was hoping I'd love this but ended up being more in like with it than in love. It's a very easy and fun read, but I had a few issues with the ending and how things resolved for each character.

While I liked all three of the main characters and felt that they all had defining characteristics, I did have a hard time telling them apart. I found myself checking the chapter title page more than once in order to figure out whose POV I was in. Once I got more into the book it was a little easier to tell them apart but it was harder at the beginning. All of them are dealing with some pretty heavy stuff but they seem to mostly ignore their problems until they all come to a dramatic culmination near the end of the book. We are supposed to believe these guys have been best friends for most of their lives but they're all quite happy ignoring the signs of distress in each other, too wrapped up in their own problems to notice what's going on with anyone else. This is probably closer to actual human behavior than not but I just wished that the guys had talked to each other more, especially after the big event at the end. It felt like things resolved too quickly and easily without anyone addressing any of the real issues.

I was looking for an easy summer read and this is exactly what Boys of Summer is. While I would have liked something that was a little more complicated, I enjoyed it and got wrapped up in the drama of The 'Locks along with everyone else. This book made me nostalgic for beaches and warm summer nights. I've never been to a place like Winlock Harbor but Brody does a great job of bringing the setting to life. If you're looking for a fun, fast summer read, Boys of Summer is a solid choice.

[b:Boys Of Summer|25505917|Boys Of Summer|Jessica Brody|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1438966312s/25505917.jpg|45284162] is a nice contemporary that has a bittersweet ending. The story is told from the perspective of three guys, Greyson, Mike and Ian. Boys of Summer is a book that follows these boys through a summer on an island where secrets and pent-up emotions get in the way of their friendship. It's the summer between high school graduation and the start of their new lives. Whether it's leaving the island they hang out at every summer to play football at Vanderbilt, or following a long-time girlfriend to New York City, or traveling across the country, this is the moment in their lives they're still connected in some way before going out into the unknown and leading separate lives. The relationships they're involved with in this book can be just that, a summer romance, or it could turn out to be something more. I think it's a bittersweet story just because of how realistic the story is and when the summer comes to a close, the boys are still figuring things out, but at eighteen, they still have their entire futures ahead of them.

this book was so addictive and so easy to breeze through. a perfect summer book. the plot lines are predictable and the writing isn’t the best but it had me turning every page over and over again. I liked how in depth the characters stories were and how you could feel their struggles. I liked the side characters too. Whitney was my favorite, she was so sassy. I’m having a hard time rating this book because the writing was that good and was very bland. but I really enjoyed my time with this book and I loved the characters despite their flaws and never wanted the story to end.

Definitely not my favorite of her books. First of all, I really didn’t like Harper. They were trying to make her into this innocent character, but she just seemed like she didn’t know what she wanted.

Also, I felt like we were coming into the middle of a story. Yes, there was a lot of background info, but it felt like it didn’t flow. I feel like this book could have been a sequel instead (first book about the boys growing up together).

Still, I think if somehow worked (I loved Julie - she was so good for Mike), and I loved the idea of the little island that they all spent summers together. I thought it was an okay book in the end.

Another hit from Jessica Brody! Here's what I loved most about Boys of Summer:

-It spotlights male friendship! (which is entirely too uncommon in YA)
-It takes place in a beach town, but not every character is an uber-rich tourist. Some of the characters are locals, and economic struggles play a key role in the storyline.
-Not every character chooses to attend a four-year university after high school—the characters have diverse career ambitions, all of which are treated as equally valid choices.
-It's different from Brody's previous contemporary novels (it deals a bit more with heavy, hard-hitting emotions), but she pulls it off well. I'm a huge fan of her writing, and Boys of Summer further cemented my appreciation.
