The plot was engaging throughout and the characters were explored well. The main character has a lot of growth throughout the book. There were a lot of questions and mysteries throughout the book which are steadily answered and mostly tied up by the end. Some things I found a little confusing but overall a great read.

It was a lot more explicit in sexism/misogyny and violance than I expected going in. There is graphic torture quite early on and this continues through the book. I felt it was important to the story though and the book explores the emotional impacts of this on the characters well.

The premise was promising. I admired the diverse characters, from various races. I found the book way too violent for the genre (mention of rape, people getting skinned alive, tortured in several other ways). Nothing is detailed but I was shocked.

And this might be just me but this was the first time I understood "show/don't tell" when it comes to writing. Many relationships, both friendships and the romance is a little sudden due to the bigger time jumps. Developing these could have used a bit more detail.

All in all, I'd recommend to anyone who wants something extremely feminist but definitely not to kids under 16-17.

I was a little wary of this book as I recently read 'Children of blood and bone' which is also a prominent ya book with similar themes and did not enjoy it at all. I may have rated both books the same but it is for very different reasons!

This book is quite brutal (especially for YA!) but in a strange way as there is very little character death (of named characters) but a lot of very unpleasant things happen to the girls. I quite enjoyed most of it and it would have been a solid 4 stars as while being super dark it was fairly enjoyable and I was enjoying the mystery that surrounded Deka's powers. However right towards the end the big twist is revealed and it just raised so many unsatisfying questions and made the prior events in the plot far more convoluted. Like I'm all for a good 3rd act reveal but this one was just a lot and made me wonder what the point was. It's sad as what made me enjoy the first 2/3 was knowing that we were building up to something big but when the plot twist came it just didn't stick the landing for me.
