I'm only giving this book three stars because I feel that as far as the mystery aspect of the book goes, it was weak at best. However, if you are a fan of the series, it is a must read. This book goes a long way in tying up loose ends and answering many questions. It also closes out Flavia's childhood. I'm anticipating changes in the series in the future. I do love Flavia and the downright coziness of this series. Everyone has to grow up, and I'm looking forward to seeing the changes Mr. Bradley will make.

"What are we going to do, Dogger?"
It seemed like a reasonable question. After all he had been through, surely Dogger knew something of hopeless situations.
"We shall wait upon tomorrow," he said.
"But-what if tomorrow is worse than today?"
"Then we shall wait upon the day after tomorrow."

I love this series so much. This book introduced a fun twist to the story and now I am looking forward to reading the following one.

As much as I adore this series, and Flavia, this book felt more like a prequel than a stand-alone mystery. It's a good and important read for Flavia followers, but not a good place to dive into the series.

Picked this up by chance in a bookstore in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, while passing through the town on a road trip. Never heard of it before, and wish I had picked up the other 2 at the store in the series. Nevertheless, I loved this and can't wait to delve into the rest of the series, probably from the beginning. Though, I had no problem reading this one out of order.

This is the first of the Flavia de Luce novels I've read/listened to, and I'll definitely read more! Great young detective hero. Good reader on the audio as well.

Another excellent installment of Flavia fun! A bittersweet tale with less poison and investigation but just as much intrigue as ever. Continued brilliance of the precocious nearly 12 year old.

I absolutely love Flavia, for me the greatest YA hero. More a hero then Harry Potter who has a group of friends supporting him, more brave the Katniss Everdeen who has tremendous physical skills, Flavia only has her brain which she puts to great use. I love an 11 year old girl who keeps a book about poisons on her bedside table as a comfort read, a detective that uses only her chemistry lab and brain to solve mysteries.

Was so looking forward to this! Not sure if I was fuzzy-headed with life at the time of reading that got in the way of my usual enjoyment/appreciation or if it wasn't as strong as the last.

So great still however.
