What is it about animals that make you cry when you read their stories? Homer was a kitten no one seemed to want, mainly because of his eyes, or lackthereof. Until Cooper was called by her vet and decided to take him in, despite her initial misgivings about adding a third cat to her household.
This book details her life with him over the span of twelve years. How he learned to adapt to his environment even with blindness and be as adept as the other cats in the household. Survived moves and plane flights, 9/11 and other misfortunes.
With animal memoirs it's hit or miss sometimes. I'm endlessly intrigued by my own animals, but recognize others might not find them as enthralling. Thankfully this book is one of the good ones, and was easy to follow along with and melt with Homer's antics.

The author's language is occasionally pretentious. (Try: "My situation had all the pristine clarity of a syllogism.") Details are sometimes superfluous. (Read the book if you would like to know what brand of cat food Gwen Cooper buys when her cat gets sick.) And occasionally things get unbelievably trivial. (The author recounts losing sleep worrying about whether she had chosen the right sights to visit during a trip to Paris.)
Despite these irritations, there is actually a pretty captivating story here. The 9/11 section in particular creates some real suspense and gives an angle on that horrible day that most of us haven't heard much about. Namely, how did the attack affect the animals who lived nearby and their guardians? In the end, you have to respect the author's high level of dedication to her cats.

A touching tale about a fearless feline. This book has it all, it’s informative, comedic, sobering and touching and will leave you believing anything is possible with a positive mental attitude like little Homer.
We follow Gwen as she tumbles through a breakup and finding somewhere to live with her two cats Scarlett and Vashti when she receives a phone call about a blind kitten, Homer. As Homer grows he becomes fearless and fiercely loyal, even fighting off a burglar and dealing with the fall out of 9/11. Described as a “tiny dynamo with a giant heart” you can’t help but fall in love with this plucky cat.
Thank you Delacorte press and NetGalley for my arc.

A heartwarming tale of a blind cat and his owner, perfect for pet and cat lovers alike.
If I could give this book an 11, I would! This story made me smile, laugh, and cry, and being a die-hard cat owner myself, I could totally relate to the author's feelings of love and devotion for her kitties. Overwhelmingly, though, the star of the story is Homer - and what an incredible creature he is! I admit that I really had no idea what a blind cat would be like, and Homer totally blew any pre-conceived notions I may have had straight out of the water! I guess it shouldn't be so shocking to learn that an animal can adapt so well and be so resilient in the face of adversity - but Homer seems to manage it all with such panache, not to mention having such a big heart. What a doll.
I'd highly recommend this book not just to cat-lovers, but to all animal lovers, as a testimony of how much a pet can enhance our lives.

Quick read, I skimmed a lot of the second half of the book
If you are an animal lover I highly recommend this book! Such a touching story about how animals really influence our lives. There were a lot of similarities in this story to my own story with my own cat
If you've ever had a cat you will love this book. I think even if you haven't you will love this book. I recommend it.
I just finished reading this book today. Homer's Odyssey is a memoir about a wonderful blind cat named Homer, who seems to have lived a remarkable life with eyes wide open, in the most literal sense. Gwen Cooper, Homer's owner, wrote about his daily antics alongside her two other cats, Scarlett and Vashti. As a cat owner (and vet!), I completely understand how each cat have different personalities and Gwen captured it in writing so well. I enjoyed reading this book so much, some parts made me tear up, some made me warm and fuzzy inside, some made me cry ugly fat tears.⠀⠀

I recommend this book for all the cat owners. I am sure it will make you want to snuggle your cat immediately, as it did for me. I want to smother Candy with hugs and kisses, if only she doesn't bite! I am also incredibly grateful and humbled that cats are here in this world to fill our lives with love
