I really can't believe I read a cat book. But it was our monthly book club selection. I like animals, but I'm more a dog person than a car person. The only cat I ever liked was a little black creature named Lightning. And even though he wasn't blind, he's who I pictured while reading this book.
Honestly, I wasn't expecting to like it. But I did. I more than liked it. This book is funny. And
The stories are so relatable to any pet owner, but I imagine even more so for cat owners.
On more than one occasion I'd stop, go back & re-read a section out loud that was too good not to share! And at one point I sat on my toilet crying. Because, hey, just cuz I had to pee didn't mean I was putting the book down! Gwen does a great job at making Homer come to life for the reader. Her stories & the great detail are beautiful!
This book was the first time I've heard anyone describe first hand what it was like to be so close to Ground Zero after 9/11. I was freaking out with her. Frantic. Angry at the officials.
This book is a gift. So thank you, Gwen Cooper for writing it.

The narrator's ability to give Homer's voice such personality makes the audiobook.
Do you have to love cats to love this book? Maybe - but it's not just a book about an amazing cat, it's a book about how to live your life with joy, optimism and grace. If a blind kitty can do it, surely a regular ol' human can do it. This is not only a great story, but a well-written, thoughtful read. I read it in 2 1/2 hours! Crying the whole time!!! Spoiler alert: this is NOT on of those sad animal books were the animal dies in the end, so don't be afraid to read it!!!!!
"Eres mucho gato, Homer," I whispered. Thou art plenty of cat.

While reading this book it is impossible to not fall in love with Homer! He's got so much character and resilience, you can't help but smile while reading each story. Every chapter made me adore him even more. This book was well written and kept me interested from beginning to end. The author also did a wonderful job of portraying the deep bonds between pets and their people and how important those relationships can be.
I absolutely loved this book!!! Anyone who loves cats, or even likes them a little bit should read this one! It's so fun to learn about the strange and remarkable things animals are capable of. :)
Homer's Odyssey is a charming memoir about life with a remarkable cat named Homer, and, oh yeah, he's blind. I have to admit I was pretty skeptical when I started reading this. On Christmas morning I unwrapped this book- a gift from my little sister, a passionate lover of pets, and thought 'Oh boy. A book about a cat. Awesome.' I'm not really the kind of person who goes for those cheesy animal books (You know the type- a series about retired race horses or rescued dogs) I tend to like books that are a little more down to earth. I was, therefore, a little bit shocked when I started to get sucked into this book. Homer is such an amazing cat. He taught Gwen so much about life, I felt comforted, and honored to learn a little something from him vicariously through Gwen's writing. This book made me chuckle a little, smile a lot, and cry three times. It was pretty good you guys. It was actually pretty damn good.
Good story but would have been much better as a magazine article & not a book. Full of boring details – a waste of time.]
wasn't real impressed with the person narrating....
some of the stories were cute and made me chuckle.
I listen to audio books as I clean house or iron. If the chore becomes more entertaining than the book ...well, we have a problem. My wandered off often. I usually am amazed at how quickly my chores are ticked off my list when I listen to my books on CD; with this book I felt I was ironing the same shirt for hours and that the h o u r s m o v e d s o s l o w l y .
Maybe I should read it for myself but after 4 discs I just wasn't interested anymore. Perhaps, I was hoping for the same attachment to characters as the characters in Vicki Myron's book Dewey: the Small Town Library Cat who Touched the World. I was equally interested in patrons, Vicki and her family, and Dewey (okay, Dewey more but they all held my interest). Homer is cute and the stories about him were entertaining. I think a kids version of the book would be delightful. All about Homer and his achievements despite the odds. A picture book series would definitely be entertaining :)
