Homer's Odyssey

This what Dewey should have been. While the author talks about herself and her life, it all links in some way to the cat. For example, her varied living situations all had to accommodate Homer in some way or other. 9/11 was horrendous all on its own, but triply so for her because her three cats were left in her apartment on their own and she had no way of getting to them.

That's how it should be--if you're supposedly writing about a cat, then everything you talk about should in some way relate to the cat.

It helps that Homer is adorable and his story touching, and the author is a likable person. I enjoyed this book very, very much and highly recommend it.

Even with a handicap, you can do whatever you put your mind to. Homer the cat is blind from birth and has never seen the real world, but that does not stop him from exploring every single little corner with abounding joy and little or no fear. He even saves his “human mom” from danger, even though he does not know what is happening ... or does he?

Okay, the vet calls and tells you that there's a three week old homeless kitten with no eyes just waiting for a home. Now I think that most of us would immediately remember an important appointment and terminate that conversation, but not Gwen Cooper. She goes to the office, meets the kitten, falls in love, names him Homer, and takes him home several days later. This book is a love letter to Homer. He's fearless, loving, curious, and joyful. Then 9/11 happens and Homer is trapped in an apartment alone for days.

really cute, i love cat, or animal books

This book! As an owner of a "special needs kitty," I must say that Gwen has captured every though I've had about my Squint (my one-eyed wonder), right down to the sometimes irrational fear. Squint has been a beacon of hope in the two and a half years I've had her. She's been through many "disasters" with me. Her book captures the very essence of loving a cat, something I never truly understood until Squint wandered onto my steps. And I'm so glad she did. If you're an animal lover, you'll love this book!

SO good! I've had this book for years, maybe since it was first published, and finally got around to reading it this month. Homer was a truly amazing cat in so many ways - yet at the same time, so quintessentially a typical cat. The tales of his escapades are delightful, and his mom (author Gwen Cooper) is a wonderful writer. The chapters about Cooper trying to get back to Homer and his feline housemates in the aftermath of 9-11 are particularly heart-wrenching. Homer changed the author's life for the better in many ways, and we can all learn some good life lessons from him. Highly recommended!

I cried a few times while reading this book. As someone who has grown up with cats (and a variety of other animals), I know how much more than "just pets" pets are. They are family. They influence and change your life. Some days they make life difficult. Most days they make my life infinitely better. There's nothing like the love between a human and an animal.

This book is less about a special needs cat and more about the life of a cat with an infectiously joyous personality. For that, I definitely recommend reading it.

What an incredible cat. He didn't let anyone, or anything, stand in his way, and never compromised his principles. Any cat lover will recognize the sheer bloodymindedness cats can have at times, and will love to see how Homer turned inbuilt feline stubbornness into something that brought light to all the people around him.
